Eli Cohen became the first Israeli foreign minister to visit Sweden in 22 years.
Sweden is the head of the Council of the European Union, the Israeli foreign minister met with his Swedish counterpart, Tobias Bullström.
He said that Sweden’s accession to NATO is an opportunity for Jerusalem and Stockholm to improve their economic ties and strengthen trade in defense, innovation and fintech (financial technologies).
Keep in mind that as a NATO member, Sweden will increase its defense budget by 5 times.
The Israeli foreign minister said that Sweden, as the head of the European Union Council, can change Europe’s attitude towards Iran’s nuclear threat.
Both the foreign ministers talked about the improvement of bilateral and international relations between their countries.
He stressed on strengthening economic ties and person-to-person contact, in a project called ‘Kibots Tech’, hundreds of Swedish university students will do internships with Israeli startups.
Relations between Israel and Sweden:
Relations between Israel and Sweden reached a low point when Sweden recognized the Palestinian state in 2014 and then-Foreign Minister Margot Wallström accused Israel of extrajudicial killings of Palestinians.
The Swedish Foreign Minister also linked the attacks in Paris in 2015 to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
