Former Prime Minister Imran Khan is accused of money transactions in the Al-Qadir Trust case. All this is not new in the political history of Pakistan.
Earlier, Prime Ministers Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Mian Nawaz Sharif, Yousuf Raza Gilani, Benazir Bhutto, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy have also been arrested. Only former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was judicially executed for being arrested on charges of murder. Other Prime Ministers were accused of corruption.
Imran Khan was arrested from the biometric room in Islamabad High Court premises. Although the Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court declared Imran Khan’s arrest legal, he issued notices to the IG Islamabad and the Interior Secretary on the arrest under the cover of the High Court. The method of arresting Imran Khan was condemned in all circles.
Tehreek-e-Insaf had prepared an action plan for the arrest of Imran Khan, thus violent protests were seen in Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta. Violent mobs attacked sensitive installations for the first time. Crowds entered these buildings in Lahore and Peshawar. ISPR declared May 9 as the darkest day in history.
On May 10, the office of Radio Pakistan in Peshawar was set on fire. Edhi Ambulance was set on fire. Foreign media gave extensive coverage of the violent riots. Tehreek-e-Insaaf militants spread poisonous propaganda across the world through social media.
Pakistani citizens living in America and Europe were given the impression that an attempt was being made to kill Imran Khan. Government circles say that during Imran Khan’s tenure, opponents were treated worse than this.
Mian Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz was struggling for life in London, but Mian Sahib, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain Safdar were kept in different jails.
Despite Mian Nawaz Sharif’s plea, he was not allowed to talk to his wife or his sons in London, but after a while the channels reported that his wife had passed away.
The current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz were kept in jail for months. Rana Sanaullah was kept in solitary confinement for 9 months in a fake drug case. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal and Khawaja Asif etc. had to spend months in jails without any reason. People’s Party members say that Asif Zardari was arrested despite his illness.
His sister Faryal Talpur was detained in Adiala Jail for months. Some analysts have their own personal opinion that the real reason behind Imran Khan’s arrest is not the Al-Qadir Trust case but Imran Khan’s statements against state institutions. It may be so and it may be wrong.

During the reign of former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif, her husband Asif Zardari was in prison for a long time. Mian Muhammad Sharif, father of Mian Nawaz Sharif, was arrested during the reign of Benazir Bhutto. When General Pervez Musharraf assumed power, other political leaders including Mian Nawaz Sharif, Mian Shahbaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi were arrested.
There came a time when Asif Ali Zardari, Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif became hosts in Landhi Jail, during this period Yusuf Raza Gilani was also arrested.
Although politicians were not arrested in the fourth government of PPP and the government of Mian Nawaz Sharif, but in the government of Imran Khan, NAB used the tactic of sending opposition politicians to jail on various charges. Now Imran Khan says that whatever happened during his rule did not happen by his will.
NAB officials used to act on someone’s request, so even the current Prime Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif will be seen saying after a few years that he had no role in what happened to Imran Khan and other leaders of Tehreek-e-Insaaf.
Police authorities are arresting Tehreek-e-Insaaf leaders under the British-era Law and Order Act. Courts will surely release these leaders. Civil administration calling for army in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is declaring the failure of civil administration.
The people in the leadership of Tehreek-e-Insaf who prepared the strategy of attacks on important installations after the arrest of Imran Khan, what were their objectives is a big question, if these people want to talk to the state institutions of Imran Khan. If they were ready to talk, this goal was not achieved, but the way to impose emergency in the country and postpone the elections was opened.
The country is currently suffering from severe economic crisis. The life of the common man has become miserable, if the country defaults, then the situation will get worse. Imran Khan should think that the politics of revenge is always a loss.
The current rulers should also recognize the fact that politicians cannot be removed from the political scene by the courts. The parties should focus on conducting urgent negotiations to hold elections. There is also a danger that the hybrid system will no longer exist.
