Indian states have stood up against legalizing same-sex marriage

New Delhi: A case is pending in the Supreme Court regarding the legalization of same-sex marriage in India, but the states have openly opposed it.

In the case before the Supreme Court of India, the government told the court that 7 states had submitted their responses regarding the legalization of same-sex marriage.

According to the government’s reply to the Supreme Court, three of the seven states, Rajasthan, Assam and Andhra Pradesh, have opposed same-sex marriage.

The court was informed that the remaining four states of Sikkim, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Manipur have sought more time to submit their replies.

After the hearing by the Supreme Court, the central government had sought the opinion of all the states in this regard.

The government counsel on Thursday appeared before the five-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice and submitted the replies received from the states.

He said that people in Rajasthan have opposed the legalization of same-sex marriage, but if two people of the same sex decide to live together, it cannot be called wrong.

Referring to the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment report to the court, the government lawyer said, ‘Legalizing same-sex marriage can destroy our family and social order.

He said that we have directed all the states to prepare a survey report based on public opinion, if people in a state are in favor of same-sex marriage, take steps to legislate in favor of same-sex marriage. go

The Andhra Pradesh government said it consulted religious leaders, adding that Hindu, Muslim and Christian religious leaders opposed the request.
