Karachi: Eating betel leaf is a common practice in Pak Vhand, but the use of betel leaves without any additives has many medicinal properties.

According to several studies, 100 grams of betel leaves contain 1.3 micrograms of iodine, 4.6 micrograms of potassium, vitamin A, B1, and other important components. Thus, betel leaf can prevent heart, digestive system and diabetes. On the other hand, it contains a large amount of antioxidants. Especially antioxidants that reduce stomach acid.

According to Indian research, the important properties of improving the digestive system and relieving constipation are also present in betel nut. In Ayurvedic medicine, mixing crushed cloves with betel nut has been used to treat respiratory ailments. Apart from this, it also relieves cough.

Chewing betel leaves for a long time soothes the heart and mind and thus helps in reducing mental stress. This is because paan contains phenolic compounds that improve mood in the body.

If diabetic patients eat only betel leaf in the morning, it can also help in controlling diabetes.
