Tel Aviv: An EU delegation canceled a Europe Day reception in the Israeli capital on May 9 after Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Atmar Ben Gower asked to attend and speak at the event.
According to global media reports, the European Union Mission in Israel announced on the social networking site Twitter about the cancellation of the event to be held in Tel Aviv.
The mission wrote on Twitter that the EU delegation in Israel was looking forward to celebrating Europe Day on May 9 as it does every year. However, regrettably this year we have decided to cancel the diplomatic reception because we do not want to present on the platform someone whose views are at odds with the values of the European Union.
It should be noted that Member of Parliament Atmar Ben Guerre belongs to the Otzma Yehudite (Jewish Power) party, which was elected as Minister of National Security in December as a result of the alliance with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party.
