Lima: At least 27 people were killed in a gold mine accident in the southern city of Arequipa in the Latin American country of Peru.
According to reports published in the world media, this is the worst case of fire in a gold mine in Peru in more than two decades, in which 27 people, including miners, lost their lives.
According to local officials, the fire in the gold mine on Saturday morning was caused by a short circuit that blocked the entrance and filled the mine with smoke, leading to casualties.
According to officials, the gold mine is owned by a small firm called Yana Kuiha. No statement was issued by the company management regarding the fire incident.
Speaking to a local television channel, Arequipa prosecutor Giovanni Matos confirmed the 27 deaths in the accident and said the mine owners would be brought to justice for the families of those killed.
It should be noted that Peru is the world’s leading producer of gold, while it ranks second in copper production.
