New Delhi: In the riots between tribals and non-tribals in the Indian state of Manipur, several churches and dozens of houses were set on fire.
According to Indian media, violent demonstrations and attacks on each other’s houses and property by angry communities continue in Imphal, the capital of Manipur state.
The police was completely unable to stop the riots by the tribal and non-tribal population. Internet service was suspended for 5 days and gatherings were banned in the state by calling the army.
Curfew was imposed in 8 worst affected districts of Manipur. Several churches and houses were set on fire, with reports of dozens of people being burnt.
The agitation started on the demand of the non-tribal population at the tribal level. The ancient tribal organizations had strongly protested this demand which turned into violence.
