Singapore City: In Singapore, a senior citizen who arranged a fake marriage with his niece to get his friend’s citizenship was sentenced to 6 months in jail.
According to Indian media, 73-year-old Indian-origin Miran Ghani married his 58-year-old Singaporean niece Nurjan Abdul Kareem to his 55-year-old ex-office colleague Abdul Qadir to obtain Singaporean citizenship.
Meeran told his former colleague that his niece’s financial situation is not good. She is in dire need of money and you need citizenship, so if you do a fake marriage and give some money to niece, both of your problems will be solved.
On which Abdul Qasim paid Noorjan 25 thousand Singapore dollars, of which Miran kept one thousand dollars because Noorjan’s ex-husband had borrowed a thousand dollars from Miran.
The marriage, which took place on September 17, 2016, was limited to papers, the main purpose of which was to obtain citizenship, but after 6 years, the scandal broke out and Miran was arrested by the Immigration Investigation Agency last year.
Today, the court sentenced Meeran to 6 months in prison for facilitating the marriage, while Abdul Qasim was also sentenced to 6 months and Noorjan Bibi to 7 months in prison.
The court awarded the minimum sentence to the accused due to coercion and poor financial conditions. The maximum penalty for this offense in Singapore is 10 years in prison and a 10,000 Singapore dollar fine.
