57 migrants, including Pakistanis, died when two boats overturned near Libya

Tripoli: 57 people, including Pakistanis, died when two migrant boats capsized in the Mediterranean Sea near Libya.

According to the foreign news agency, 57 people died and many others went missing when two boats overturned near the coast of Kolibia on Tuesday. The boats were carrying migrants from Pakistan, Syria, Tunisia and Egypt who wanted to go to Europe.

According to an eyewitness, around 80 people were on board a boat that sank, and rescue officials fear that more bodies may be recovered from the scene.

According to the International Organization for Migration, in the first three months of this year, 441 migrants have drowned while trying to reach Europe, which is the highest number of deaths in a three-month period in the last six years.

It should be noted that since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Libya has become the main point of departure for most African migrants trying to reach Europe.

Italy rescued 47 boats carrying about 1,600 migrants in the central Mediterranean over the past two days and brought them ashore on the island of Lampedusa.
