The wreckage of the ship ‘Monte Video Maru’, which was destroyed in the Second World War, has been found 4000 meters deep in the sea near the Philippines after 81 years.
According to a foreign news agency, in July 1942, there were more than 1,000 Australian passengers on this ship, most of whom were prisoners of war.
The ship was destroyed by the American submarine USS Sturgeon.
It was the deadliest incident in Australia’s maritime history, killing 979 Australians, including at least 850 military personnel.
According to the Australian agency, 13 prisoners of war from other countries were also on board, making the total number of prisoners of war dead at 1,060.
In this regard, the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albinis, tweeted that the final resting place of the Montevideo Maru was finally found, with 1060 prisoners of war and 850 Australian military personnel on board.
He wrote that now it is hoped that the families of these 850 military personnel who have been waiting for their loved ones for a long time will get peace.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albinis said that the search for the ship was launched on April 6 and was found with the help of high-tech equipment in just 12 days.
They say the remains of the ship are buried several times deeper than the wreckage of the Titanic, so the ship will be allowed to remain at the bottom of the ocean out of respect for the loved ones of the fallen servicemen.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albinis has also written that none of the artefacts or human remains found in the sunken ship will be removed from its place.
