Brisbane: Urinary tract infection is common worldwide and drinking cranberry juice may be beneficial in this condition, with further evidence from Australia.

Women are particularly affected by urinary tract infection (UTI) and this disease can attack them repeatedly. Cranberry or cranberry juice is usually drunk in this context. Before this, this juice can also be useful for the heart.

Scientists from Flinders University in South Australia have reported in a study that if women drink cranberry juice regularly, the risk of recurrent UTI can be avoided in 25% of their children and 50% of children who drink the juice.

Similarly, patients undergoing complicated procedures such as bladder radiotherapy for UTI can reduce their risk of reinfection by 53% if they continue to drink this juice.

A UTI is a painful bacterial infection that affects the urinary tract, bladder, and kidneys. One in two elderly women around the world may suffer from it, which shows its prevalence.

Australian scientists conducted a detailed review of 50 studies involving 9,000 people. Thus, this is the first major study of its kind to scientifically demonstrate the efficacy of cranberry juice.

In cultures around the world, including Pakistan, it is a common practice to give karonde juice in urinary diseases. It is also mentioned in Greek medicine, but scientifically research has started on it now. However, several companies already sell cranberry juice in the form of syrup, which is also commonly available in Pakistan.

Once a UTI occurs, it tends to recur, so consuming cranberry juice can prevent it from happening again.
