Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen inaugurated the permanent embassy in Turkmenistan today.
Diplomatic relations between Israel and Turkmenistan began 30 years ago, but Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, was only a temporary embassy.
On the other hand, the Muslim-majority country of Turkmenistan still does not have an embassy in Israel.
Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said in his statement that I have come to open the Israeli embassy 17 kilometers from the Iranian border, and will also meet with the president and other officials.
After meeting the President of Turkmenistan, Sardar Berdymkhamidov, the Israeli Foreign Minister described his visit as historic.
He said that relations with the ‘energy superpower’ of Central Asia are of strategic importance.
He said that we want to expand the relationship to agriculture, water, technology and border defence, there is no doubt that both countries can benefit from closer cooperation.
It should be noted that Turkmenistan, a desert country of 6 million people rich in gas, is a neutral country, not a part of any political or military bloc globally or regionally.
Turkmenistan’s main economic partner is China, which buys huge amounts of gas from here.
