The Washington Post, citing leaked intelligence documents, reported that Egypt had planned to develop rockets for Russia but then suspended the effort and sent the ammunition to Ukraine after talks with US officials. Decided to provide.
The Post reported last week that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had secretly planned to produce 40,000 rockets for Russia, but a new report based on leaked Pentagon files circulating online, the newspaper said. Cairo suspended the project in early March, it said.
The Washington Post said Egypt also approved the sale of artillery to the US “for transfer to Ukraine”.
The change is being hailed as an “apparent diplomatic victory” for President Joe Biden’s administration.
