Torrential rains wreak havoc in Florida

Heavy rains caused flooding in the US state of Florida, the streets of the coastal city of Fort Lauderdale turned into ponds, vehicles were submerged in several feet of water.

Heavy rains in Florida have canceled 400 flights, while airports and schools in the city have been closed until Friday.

A state of emergency has been imposed in the state while people trapped in the water are being rescued by boats.

According to the National Weather Service, Fort Lauderdale received 635 mm of rain in a 24-hour period, one of the heaviest in a millennium.

In addition, Miami has also received up to 20 inches of rain in the past several days, experts say, the increased number and intensity of storms along with the prolonged drought in the country is a harbinger of climate change.
