Karachi: Dismissed contract employees from Dawood University of Engineering and Technology MA protested on Jinnah Road for the fifth day and raised slogans against the Vice Chancellor.

According to Express News, a protest was held outside the main gate of Dawood University of Technology by the dismissed employees. The protesters blocked MA Jinnah Road and raised placards in their hands and shouted slogans against the Vice Chancellor.

Dismissed employees talking to Express said that more than 42 daily wages employees and 13 contract employees were dismissed from Dawood University of Engineering and Technology. Most of them belong to the lower grades, but nine research associates are also among those expelled.

The employees have demanded that the terminated contract employees should be reinstated immediately, the employees should be made permanent, if this is not done, the protest will continue daily.

It should be remembered that these employees were appointed during the tenure of former Vice Chancellor Dr. Faizullah Abbasi.

On the other hand, the administration of Dawood University of Engineering and Technology said regarding the protest of contract employees that no contract employee of the university was dismissed before the time given in the contract and their number is not 200 but 88 and all 88 Contract employees are completing their contract period.

According to the management, it is clearly written in the contract given to them that the contract is temporary employment which can be terminated on one month’s notice, but all the contract employees are in their jobs whose tenure has not been completed, the prejudice of protesting contract employees. The allegation is baseless and absurd as the contract employees include other nationalities and the decision not to renew the contract was made because of the government’s ban on temporary employment, not on the basis of language or caste.

The administration further says that a letter has been written to the competent authority for permission regarding contract employees.

It may be noted that the university is currently suffering from a severe financial deficit and is facing a financial deficit of around Rs 550 million and the burden of arrears.

Due to the financial deficit, the university does not have the money to pay the salary of the permanent employees for the next month and this month’s salary has also been paid due to the overdraft facility of the bank.
