Despite the modern technology, there is still a huge loss of water in the crops and in this context, a modern smart sensor has been created which can prevent water wastage for agricultural irrigation. Experimental Sensor King Abdullah University of Science It has been developed by Muhammad Azodi and Khalid Salma of KAUST, which notes soil moisture and indicates whether there is excess water in it or if more water is needed. It is built using a metal-organic framework (MOF), which is also a relatively new material. The sensor sinks into the soil like a nail and is covered with a thin layer of moisture-sensing MOF.
It has lattice-like microscopic structures that can contain many kinds of molecules. The team of Saudi experts has tried several types of MOFs one after the other, and one of them proved to be the best. It is named Cr-soc-MOF-1. This substance can absorb twice its weight in water. The MOE notes the slight change in electrical current as the water enters. It is sensed by the sensor and its reading is displayed.
Interestingly, regardless of whether the soil is silty or rich in compost, the sensor can detect water scarcity or overabundance within eight minutes. In the next phase, it will be tested on real crops and fields. It can warn if water is too much and so the excess water can be used for other purposes.
