Fukushima: Pets can reduce the risk of food allergies in children, a new study has found.
A study conducted by Japanese researchers found that young children who had pets in their homes had a lower risk of developing allergies to milk, eggs and nuts, while children who I had pet cats with low risks of egg, wheat and soybean allergies.
According to study lead author Dr. Hisao Okabe from Fukushima Medical University in Japan, pets can reduce the risk of allergies but not completely protect against food allergies. The relationship between the two can vary depending on the species of animal and the causative diet.
For the research, Hisao Okabe’s team analyzed data from 66,000 Japanese infants and found that the presence of pet cats or dogs around pregnant women or during the children’s infancy (at least three years of age) Fewer food allergies were the cause.
However, research has not determined why pets cause fewer food allergies. However, a previous study suggested that stomach bacteria could be the cause.
