Elections should be held within 90 days of dissolution of the Assembly, Lahore High Court

Lahore: During the hearing of the petition filed by Tehreek-e-Insaf against not giving the date of general elections in Punjab, the Lahore High Court has said that the elections should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the Assembly.

The court remarked during the hearing that an important legal point has been raised in the petition of Tehreek-e-Insaaf. The court accepted PTI’s request for hearing and issued a notice to the Governor of Punjab through the Secretary and the Election Commission seeking their response.

The hearing on PTI’s application was conducted by Justice Jawad Hassan of Lahore High Court, in which Barrister Ali Zafar argued on behalf of Tehreek-e-Insaf. During the hearing, PTI General Secretary Asad Umar and former Speaker Sabatin Khan, Mian Aslam Iqbal, Shibli Faraz, Ali Sahi were also present in the court room.

Barrister Ali Zafar argued that the election should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the assembly, while the governor of Punjab has not yet announced the date of the election. The court should direct the governor to announce the date of the election. Justice Jawad Hassan remarked that I agree with you that elections should be held in 90 days. The question is who is announcing the date of the elections. You should first make the Election Commission a party.

The PTI lawyer said that the Election Commission also wrote a letter to the Governor of Punjab regarding the date of the election, but the Governor has not yet given any reply. The Election Commission also stands with us on this position. Justice Jawad Hasan said that elections are to be held in 90 days. We will find out who will do it. We will fight for democracy.

During the hearing, the court expressed its displeasure at the lack of preparation on behalf of the Punjab Governor’s lawyer. The court called the federal government’s lawyer to the rostrum and inquired whether Tehreek-e-Insaf wrote a letter to you, the Election Commission wrote a letter to you. What is your position? The counsel for the federal government sought time for arguments.
