US Permanent Representative to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Julian Smith has said that the doors of NATO are open for India, but currently there is no discussion regarding giving it permanent membership.
Talking to the Indian media yesterday, the NATO official said that if New Delhi wants to work with the military alliance, the doors are open for it.
Julian Smith said the military alliance is seeking more ties with New Delhi after NATO’s initial meeting with the Indian government in early March.
He said that we are not thinking of giving membership to anyone in the Indo-Pacific and Asia-Pacific, this military alliance is the European-Atlantic military alliance.
He said that but the doors of NATO are open for this region, currently there is no intention to expand it to form a global military alliance.
“If India is interested, there can be contacts, but at this stage we will not invite India for NATO membership unless we know its intentions,” he said.
