Former head of the British Royal Marines, Major General Matt Holmes, committed suicide under pressure to be superseded, a commission of inquiry has reported.
Jason Pegg, who conducted Matt Holmes’ post-mortem, said in the inquest report that Major General Holmes was under stress due to being removed from his post.
The report said that General Holmes was also concerned about the withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan.
General Holmes’ junior officer was made head of the Royal Marines, which the late general was unhappy about, worried about how he would be able to lead the Marines amicably.
According to Jason Pegg, he was very disappointed and angry when General Holmes was stripped of the post of Commandant General.

His wife, Lee Holmes, told the commission of inquiry that in the spring of 2021 he received an order from the military to either accept the reorganization or resign, something General Holmes felt disrespected.
The general’s wife said that at that time the American and British forces were withdrawing from Afghanistan, General Holmes was thinking a lot about this matter.
He said that this is the reason why our marriage was ruined, on September 14, 2021, he was sitting on the bed with a gun, later the police seized the weapon from him.
Jonathan Ball, chief executive of the Royal Marines Association, said Major General Holmes was concerned about the security of Afghan military officers following the US and British withdrawal.
He said that General Holmes was concerned about the safety of Afghan military officers and their families, and considered it his failure not to be able to help Afghan soldiers leave the country.
