nationwide blackouts; Nepra released the inquiry report

Islamabad: NEPRA released an inquiry report on the blackout in the country on January 23.

The report held NTDC, Junco Two, Port Qasim Electric Power Company, K Electric responsible for the blackout. According to the report, the production of electricity from wind power plants in the south has been increased and the production of electricity from hydropower plants in the north has been reduced. The oversupply of power transmission lines made the system unbalanced. The frequency was higher in the south and lower in the south.

According to the inquiry report, the Port Qasim power plant went into runback mode causing three plants of K2 to trip, resulting in a loss of 1940 MW of power from the system. There was cascading in Lucky, Engro, Shanghai Electric and Thar Coal. There was a blackout in the south region due to the suspension of power supply to the south zone.

Despite adding 3834 MW of power to the system, the North region tripped. The lack of SCADA system at NPCC delayed the restoration of power plants.

The inquiry committee has recommended training for NTDC staff to understand the transmission system besides strengthening the HVDC system for power transmission.

The inquiry committee says that the SCADA system is very important for the security of the power system. SOP should be established for determining the quantity of water released from dams. The committee has also recommended installation of modern technology devices.
