Kagawa, Japan: A 15-year-old girl who was the only student at the only college on Japan’s remote Uteshima Island has completed her graduation after 9 years.

Akino Amanaka, the only student at her college on a remote island in western Japan, thanked her teachers, family and locals for graduating alone this spring, according to Japanese media.

Located 15 km off the coast of Kagawa City in western Japan, Oteshima Island is part of the same city with an area of 0.6 square km and a coastline of about 3.8 km.

34 people lived on this island. Fishing is the main source of income for the islanders, however the island faces an aging population. Imanaka is the only resident of the island under the age of 18.

Reflecting on his past 9 years in college, Imanaka said the time flew by too quickly and didn’t seem to matter. “I am thankful that I got the chance to enjoy my college life,” he said. Thank you very much for the support of my teachers, my family and the people of the island.
