New Delhi: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has alleged that he was thrown out of Parliament for demanding an inquiry against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s business ally, but will continue his struggle for the survival of democracy.
Rahul Gandhi, 52, was removed from his parliamentary seat on March 24 after a court ruling found him guilty of defamation for comments he made while campaigning in Modi’s home state of Gujarat in 2019. Which was seen as an insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Narendra Modi’s government has been widely accused by political opponents and social organizations of using the law to target and silence critics, but Rahul Gandhi said he would not bow to threats.
“I will do whatever it takes to defend the democracy of this country,” he told reporters. The expulsion of Narendra Modi’s main opponent from Parliament comes at a time when the prime minister’s relationship with Gautam Adani, one of India’s most powerful industrialists, is under scrutiny.
Modi has been a close associate of Gautam Adani for decades, but Gautam Adani’s business activities came under the spotlight this year when a US investment firm accused him of fraud.
“I have been disqualified because Prime Minister Narendra Modi is afraid of the next speech on Gautam Adani. I will keep asking the question — what is the Prime Minister’s relationship with Mr. Adani?”
