London: A new study has found that high levels of caffeine in the blood can help people lose weight.
In a study conducted at Imperial College London, scientists have concluded that the speed at which caffeine is metabolized in the body can affect weight. However, more research is needed to determine whether drinking more coffee can help with weight loss.
The study involved nearly 10,000 people who participated in six long-term studies. The study concluded that participants with higher blood caffeine levels had lower body mass index (BMI). Apart from this, the chances of suffering from type 2 diabetes were also less.
In contrast, research has shown that rapid caffeine metabolism is associated with a slightly higher BMI with type 2 diabetes.
According to Dr Dipinder Gill, a clinical scientist at Ameril College London, 95% of our caffeine is metabolized by an enzyme. CYP1A2 and AHR are two genes that affect the level and action of this enzyme.
He said that research using these genetic variants (which cause people to metabolise caffeine faster or slower) showed that slow metabolisers had higher levels of caffeine in the blood and A higher intake lowers body mass index and diabetes risks.
