Karachi: Karachi Chamber of Commerce has demanded the government to pressurize terminal operators, shipping companies to abolish demurrage, detention charges.
Karachi Chamber President Muhammad Tariq Yusuf while appreciating the initiative of KPT and PQA to waive demurrage charges urged the terminal operators and shipping lines to share the burden of heavy demurrage and detention charges with the business community. Adopt measures to release the thousands of stranded containers as soon as possible, which will bring almost halted commercial, industrial and economic activities back to normal.
Barely 5 to 10 percent of containers are stuck in KPT and PQA, while the remaining 90 percent of containers are lying at private terminals, which the government has already requested to waive its demurrage charges while shipping lines have also been given some relaxation in detention charges. should be done so that the difficulties faced by the business community in this difficult time can be reduced.
He said that the disastrous situation at the ports is purely a result of wrong policies which have been implemented in haste without consulting the stakeholders.
