Football players have a higher risk of dementia than goalkeepers

Stockholm: A multi-year study in Sweden found that the risk of dementia in male footballers is one and a half times higher than in the general population.

According to research, about 9% of footballers develop this disease, but on the other hand, goalkeepers are not at high risk of this disease and there is a simple reason for this.

Although there are many other causes of dementia, heading a football is also linked to brain injury that increases the risk of accidental dementia in footballers, the study found. And on the other hand, since goalkeepers’ job is not to hit the football, they are less prone to it.

Similarly, a study in Scotland on the risk of dementia for footballers found that ex-professional players were three and a half times more likely to die from dementia than their peers in the general population.
