Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved an increase of 3 rupees 23 paise in the price per unit of electricity.

NEPRA heard the request of the federal government to increase the per unit price of electricity. While approving the hike in electricity price by Rs 3 23 paise per unit, Nepra said that there is no option but to accept the request of the government.

Chairman Nepra inquired whether this surcharge will control the flow of circular debt or will the stock of 2600 billion be reduced? Tell the public that the monster that has gathered is not going anywhere.

The Power Division said that the 209 billion rupees they are asking for will reduce the circular debt flow. Last year circular debt was increased by 536 and the next year is estimated to be the same. Three hundred and thirty five billion rupees is for 126 billion PHL markup.

Chairman Nepra said that after the markup, the price of electricity will go up to Rs 38. Whenever the price increases, the demand for electricity will decrease and theft will increase. The direction in which we are going will not improve in the power sector.

Member Nepra said that the ministry has no plan to reduce the circular debt. If the plan is to outsource the feeder, then the circular debt will reach 3 thousand billion. You have no assessment of how the price increase will affect the industry.

Nepra had imposed a head charge of Rs 3.39 a few days ago.
