For the second time in a row, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, also known as the Academy Awards, has rejected a request by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to address the Academy Awards online on March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Comedian-turned-politician Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who assumed the presidency of Ukraine in May 2019, has been feted at other awards ceremonies in the past.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and annexation of its territories, he gave a virtual address at the Cannes and Venice film festivals last year, and recently did the same at the Grammy Awards ceremony.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy gave a standing ovation at the Berlin Film Festival.
However, a request by WME power agent Mike Simpson to the Academy to allow the Ukrainian president to make a virtual speech at Sunday’s ceremony was reportedly denied.
