Abu Dhabi:(PNP) In a high-octane clash at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders handed the table-topping Desert Vipers their first loss of the DP World ILT20 Season 4, winning by a mere one run.
Liam Livingstone led the Knight Riders’ charge with a blistering 76 off 48 balls, while Alishan Sharafu (39 off 35) and Sherfane Rutherford (24* off 14) ensured a competitive total of 181/5. Despite a bright start from the Vipers, potent bowling spells from Andre Russell (2/16), Ajay Kumar (2/47), and Jason Holder (1/28) kept the contest tight and ultimately sealed the victory.
The Vipers’ chase was powered by a solid opening stand between Fakhar Zaman (44 off 32) and Max Holden (52 off 43), who put together 53 runs in the powerplay. Holden’s 40-ball half-century, featuring six boundaries, kept the Vipers in contention. However, crucial breakthroughs by Russell, who removed Holden and Zaman, combined with Sunil Narine’s tight four-over spell conceding just 23 runs, shifted the momentum.
Hasan Nawaz briefly revived hopes with two consecutive sixes, but quick wickets from Sam Curran and Shimron Hetmyer left the Vipers needing 19 off 12 balls. A late cameo from Khuzaima Tanveer (16 off 9) nearly completed the chase, but Ajay Kumar defended the remaining 12 runs in the final over, handing the Knight Riders a narrow but thrilling win.
The Knight Riders’ innings had begun shakily, losing two early wickets within the first two overs. Alex Hales counterattacked with 25 off 18 before falling, but Livingstone and Sharafu steadied the innings with a 50-run partnership. Livingstone’s aggressive late surge, including two successive sixes off Qais Ahmad, set up the challenging total for the Vipers.
