Israel’s army chief Lt. Gen. Herzi Halawi has warned the government that there could be internal divisions within the army over judicial reforms.
Army Chief General Herzi Halawi says that the conflict over judicial reforms may cause young people to refuse mandatory service in the Israeli army.
He said this during a meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoaf Gallant.
The Israeli army chief said that those in the reserve force have said they will not be part of the compulsory military service as a protest against the judicial reforms.
After hearing these reservations from the Army Chief, the Defense Minister urged the Prime Minister to negotiate with the opposition and allied parties on the issue of judicial reforms so that the protestors could be persuaded to understand.
Former Defense Minister Benny Gantz also expressed concerns and said that weakening the army and the country in opposition to the reform bill is not the right attitude.
The statements came as 37 of the 40 pilots in an elite unit of the Israeli Air Force announced they would not take part in exercises scheduled for this week in protest against the judicial reforms.
