60 percent of women suffer from obesity, fear of life-threatening diseases

Karachi: About 60 percent of Pakistani women in Pakistan are obese, including married and teenage girls, 80 percent of women are overweight according to the Asian standard of obesity.

The main cause of obesity among Pakistani women is lack of regular exercise and consumption of unhealthy food, these views were expressed by gynecologists and other health experts in connection with World Obesity Day with the support of local pharmaceutical company Pharmavoo Abbasi Shaheed. Health experts urged Pakistani women to change their lifestyle and lose weight to avoid various deadly diseases. On the occasion of World Obesity Day, awareness walks and seminars were organized across the country including Karachi.

Awareness walks were organized by healthcare professionals in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar. Professor Shabnam Nadeem of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said that obesity in women increases the risk of many serious and fatal diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer, POS, pregnancy problems and many other fatal diseases.

He said that obesity has adverse effects on human health and shortens life expectancy while increasing the financial burden as a result of health care at the individual, national and global levels. 88% of people are obese due to physical inactivity and consumption of unhealthy food.

He urged all physicians treating women to advise women to eat a healthy diet and exercise daily and try to stay physically fit, citing recent research.
