Belarus;  Nobel laureate human rights activist sentenced to 10 years in prison

A court in Belarus has sentenced Nobel Prize-winning human rights activist Alice Bialitsky to 10 years in prison.

Al Jazeera reported that he was convicted of tax evasion and financing protests. In this regard, exiled Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana said that Alice Bialitsky and other activists convicted in the same case had been unfairly convicted and that the verdict was ‘horrific’.

“We must do everything we can to fight this shameful injustice and free them,” he said on Twitter. Belarus’ state news agency Belta confirmed the sentence to Alice Bialitsky.

Prosecutors had asked the court to sentence Alice Bialitsky to 12 years. Alice Bialitsky denied all the allegations against her.
