Remains of a star that exploded 11,000 years ago have been found

The European Southern Observatory has captured an image of the remnants of a star that exploded 11,000 years ago. According to reports, this intense event known as Vela Supernova and its aftermath was captured by the Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. During a supernova, shock waves are created that pass through the surrounding gas. These waves compressed the gas and created intricate patterns similar to tangled threads. These layers of gas were heated by the intense energy released by the explosion, causing them to glow.

NASA describes the Vela supernova remnant as a cloud of debris from the final explosion of a massive star. A supernova occurs when a star explodes at the end of its life, spewing debris and particles into space. When a star runs out of fuel, the outward pressure decreases. When this pressure becomes too low, there comes a time when the star’s gravity takes over and within seconds the star explodes.

Each particle on the star’s outer surface is heated to millions of degrees and ejected into the surrounding gas, creating visible haloes. The Vela supernova remnant is located 800 light-years from Earth and is considered one of the closest supernova remnants to Earth.
