London: Due to the acute shortage of fruits and vegetables in the UK, people are forced to rush from one shopping store to another.

According to the world news agency, when the head of the European Union, Ursula van der Leyen, arrived in London on an official visit, the people worried about the shortage of fruits and vegetables said mockingly on social media, “Can you bring us some tomatoes?”

British people have highlighted this important problem through memes created on social media, but the solution is not with the head of the European Union like the government.

Major supermarkets in the UK are also offering consumers limited quantities of tomatoes and cucumbers for salads. Black pepper is also being given in small quantity while these items are not available in small stores.

Meanwhile, Environment Secretary Therese Coffey has suggested that instead of eating tomatoes and cucumbers imported from foreign countries, people should eat more turnips because it is produced in the country and does not have to be imported.

Tomatoes and other vegetables are brought to the UK from Spain and Morocco, but due to climate change, heavy rains and snow in Spain and Morocco have caused severe disruptions to harvesting and shipping.

Anti-Brexit politicians say that these conditions are being seen due to Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, while there is no shortage in other European countries.

On the other hand, the government blames the shortage of vegetables and fruits on the bad weather in Spain and Morocco and the increase in the prices of petrol and electricity.

It should be noted that production levels of tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants in Spain during the first three weeks of February fell by more than 20% compared to the same period in 2022.

Similarly, the heat and drought in Europe last year is also affecting the vegetable harvest in other countries including Germany.

Agricultural experts claim that the shortage of vegetables and fruits in the UK may persist for another month.
