Sewerage system is ineffective, sewers are boiling in places

Karachi: For the past 15 years, the water board in the city has failed to clean the sewage system regularly.

No activity is seen on the part of the organization and the broken and rotten sewerage lines are not being replaced and repaired, due to which the sewerage system of the city has become ineffective and the sewers are boiling in places.

Due to the dirty water coming out of the boiling sewers, the citizens, especially the worshipers, are facing severe difficulties in transportation.

Due to the accumulation of dirty water on the highways, traffic jams have become a daily routine, due to which the citizens have to waste time, increase the financial costs due to the use of extra fuel and also face looting.

The citizens have demanded the government to immediately reform the sewage system in the city and establish the system of local governments immediately.

According to the Express survey, the city’s Old City Area, Gulshan Iqbal, Gulistan Johar, Landhi Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Liaquatabad, FC Area, FB Area, PECHS, Qayyumabad, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad. , New Karachi, North Karachi, Suraljar Bazar, Peer Colony, Garden and other areas’ sewage system has been completely destroyed.

Sewer covers are also missing from places, dirty water is boiling from the sewers in every street, due to the lack of monitoring system by the Sindh government, the officers and staff of the water board have become insensitive to the extent that the citizens Complaints of sewage system failure are not resolved even after several days.

The construction of high-rise buildings in these areas, especially the construction of portions in small plots of 80 yards to 120 yards, has also badly affected the water and sewerage system of the entire city.

The lines laid during the city government are still running, Salim Khan

Muhammad Salim Khan, president of the Local Resident Project Union, said that when the city had a system of local governments, the sewerage lines were changed and new lines were laid in the city, but now for many years, large-scale sewage system reforms have been neglected. Therefore, no practical work is seen anywhere.

He said that along with densely populated areas, many markets and highways of the city are seen boiling sewers, dirty water is standing. When contacted, the water board and local bodies blame each other for the problem.

He said that until empowered local governments are established in the city. All issues, including sewage, will remain the same, he said, adding that local governments have easier access to representatives because they are elected by popular vote. Therefore, these public representatives are more interested in solving problems than government institutions.

Citizens throw garbage in open sewers and drains, social workers

Social activist Saad said that one of the main reasons for boiling sewers in densely populated areas of the city is the people themselves. Garbage accumulates in the sewers and due to the filling of these sewers, the drainage water boils and accumulates on the streets and roads.

Street sewer cleaners don’t have safety kits

Inspector Arshad Masih, who oversees sewage affairs in the local body, said that the cleaning of sewer lines in the city is mostly done by traditional methods. These include long bamboos, shovels, iron rods, different types of wire, rope buckets, a long rod attached to a long hook of various sizes (used to remove garbage from sewers) and other tools.

He said that big machinery is used to clean big sewage lines and sewers, but Kandimen clean the lines of the streets. These Kandimen do not have safety kits, they clean these drains and sewage lines without caring for their lives.

Measures are being taken for drainage across the city, said Water Board spokesperson

The spokesperson of the Water Board says that good measures are being taken by the Water Board administration to improve drainage across the city, while the water consumption would have been reduced due to winter and the sewage lines were affected due to grease in the sewer lines. On which steps are being taken on an emergency basis by the Water Board.

Dirty water accumulated on the roads is causing the spread of diseases, Dr. Shoaib

Dr. Muhammad Shoaib said that cleanliness is half faith, dirty water collected on the roads is a major cause of disease spread. The summer season has started, if the collected dirty water is not cleaned, the citizens may suffer from these diseases, so the citizens should take special care of cleanliness, wash their hands with soap after coming home, If possible, arrange for immediate drainage of waste water collected around you and clear garbage immediately, use simple home food and drink boiled water.

High-rise buildings were constructed from highways to neighborhoods

Muhammad Tawheed, Urban Planner of IBA, said that horizontal constructions have been done in the city without planning, high-rise buildings have been constructed from the main highways of the city to the streets, in the street where ten families lived, now 50 families live. The population has increased many folds while on the other hand there is the same old rotten water and sewage system due to which many problems are arising.

He said that the same old small-sized lines are installed in the sewage system, which are broken in places, while there are leaks in the water lines, contaminated water with a mixture of dirty water and fresh water is being supplied to the citizens. Health problems are arising among the citizens, sewers are boiling in places due to which inner cities and major highways are flooded.

He said that the latest example of this is Jahangir Road, whose sewage system has not been fixed till date. There are many areas in the city where dirty water will be seen all the time on the roads. and other insects are born and this causes the spread of dengue and malaria. Routine cleaning by the water board is neither done manually nor by machines. has given several machines to clean the sewage lines but those machines do not seem to be working.

Mohammad Tawheed said that in order to fix the sewage system, the water board should clean it manually and mechanically on a short-term basis, and replace the entire sewage system in the medium and long term.

Residents started cleaning the sewers in the neighborhoods under you

Citizen Humayun said that the cleaning of sewers at the neighborhood level is done under your own help, despite complaints to the government local bodies, the cleaning of sewers and sewage lines is not done, the cleaning of sewers is done by private contractors. It is done by those who charge for their services.

He said that the government should implement the issues of sewerage system at the level of the Union Committee, new sewerage lines should be laid in the city. There is stagnant water which is causing diseases, the sewage system has become obsolete in the face of the growing population.

Muhammad Khalid, a social worker who is doing sanitation work at the regional level, said that the population of Karachi is growing rapidly and most of the small residential units are being built without any planning. If taken, it will be known that the sewage system is many years old.

He said that at the time sewage lines were laid in different areas of the city, it was based on the population and the constructions of that time. If you examine the densely populated areas and see that the street where there were a few houses many years ago, now these houses have been replaced by buildings. A hundred houses have been built, so tell me how the sewerage lines will bear the pressure of the sewage water, so it can be said that the sewage system in the congested areas of Shahr Quaid has become completely rotten and ineffective. The main reason is that sewage water is standing in places in the city and this dirty water is causing diseases in the streets and roads of the city. He said that at this time the city needs a new drainage system.
