Terrible Train Crash in Greece;  26 people were killed, dozens were injured

Greece: 26 people were killed and dozens injured in a terrible train accident near Larissa.

According to the international news agency, passenger and cargo trains coming from the opposite direction collided near Larissa, Greece, resulting in 26 deaths and many injuries.

At least 26 people have been killed and 85 injured after two trains collided near the Greek city of Larissa, the fire brigade said. Meanwhile, the hospital administration says that the condition of 25 people injured in the accident is serious.

A passenger train from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki and a cargo train from Thessaloniki to Larissa collided near the central Greek city, Governor of Thessaly Konstantinos Agorastos told local media, adding that the collision was “very strong”.

He added that the first 4 bogies derailed while 2 were completely destroyed. About 250 passengers have been evacuated safely on buses to Thessaloniki, Agorastos said. Several bogies derailed and at least 3 caught fire after the collision about 380 km north of Athens.

On the other hand, the rail operator Hellenic Train said that the passenger train from Athens to Thessaloniki was carrying about 350 passengers at the time of the collision.
