Srinagar: More than 100 women who were gang-raped by Indian forces 32 years ago in Kupwara district of Occupied Kashmir are still deprived of justice.
On February 23, 1991, the occupying Indian soldiers gang-raped more than 100 women in Kannpooshpura area of Kupwara. The Indian forces, showing shamelessness and brazenness, termed the mass rape as revenge for the alleged firing by the Hurriyat militants.
A US State Department report published in 1992 stated that there was irrefutable evidence of mass rape of women by Indian soldiers at Kannpooshpura.
The local people had set up the Kannan Poshpura Commission of Inquiry under their support for justice, which was forcibly abolished by the occupying Indian government.
The Indian government declared the tragedy as propaganda and blamed the Indian army and to cover up the tragedy, the police officials were exchanged several times. India continues to ignore the demands of international human rights organizations to investigate the Kannan Pooshpura tragedy.
