It should be noted that the Lahore High Court had decided to form election tribunals, on the decision of the Lahore High Court, Chief Justice Shahzad Malik had issued orders for the formation of 8 tribunals yesterday.

According to sources, an important meeting was held in the Election Commission on the issue of election tribunals. The Election Commission has decided not to represent itself in the election tribunals. The Election Commission will neither send its representative to the Election Tribunal nor join the proceedings of the Tribunal.

According to Election Commission sources, in the Election Commission meeting, there was also a consultation on sending a presidential reference to the Judicial Council against Chief Justice Lahore High Court and Justice Shahid Karim.

The meeting was told that three types of election tribunals were established to hear election petitions regarding election disputes, in the first type, election tribunals were established in consultation with the Lahore High Court and the Election Commission, in the second type, the Lahore High Court appointed the Election Commission. Tribunals were established without consultation and in the third category, the Election Commission itself established tribunals without consulting the Lahore High Court.

It was informed in the meeting that under sub-clause three of the Election Act 2017, the Election Commission has the authority to establish tribunals after consulting the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court.
