59% increase in energy cost for power generation

Islamabad: According to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the cost of energy for power generation in January increased by 59% compared to the previous month to Rs 11.20 paise per unit.

According to Tahir Abbas, Head of Research at Arif Habib Limited, the increase in energy costs was due to lower electricity generation from hydro and nuclear, media reports said.

The share of hydropower generation in January was 9.4% compared to 20.4% in December, the average cost of electricity increased due to the decrease in hydropower generation as the energy cost of dams is zero.

Similarly, the share of nuclear power in the energy mix also decreased to 22 percent in January from 27.1 percent in the previous month.
