Lahore: The Punjab government presented the Defamation Bill 2024 in the House.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rahman presented the bill in the House, the bill will be applicable on print, electronic and social media.

False and untrue news spread under the bill will be subject to defamation case, the bill will also apply to fake news spread through YouTube, Tik Tok, X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.

News spread to damage a person’s personal life and public position will be dealt with under the law.

Under the bill, there will be a compensation of three lakh rupees, in case of allegations against persons holding constitutional positions, the High Court bench will be authorized to hear cases. For women and transgenders, the facility of the government legal team will be available for legal assistance in the case.

On the other hand, the government rejected the proposal of journalist organizations to postpone the bill. Journalist organizations had demanded to delay the bill for a few days in a meeting with the Punjab Information Minister today. Journalist organizations want to give their suggestions on the bill.

The opposition also rejected the defamation bill, the opposition submitted more than ten amendments related to the bill in the Punjab Assembly.
