Cambridge: A new study has found that babies who are born by caesarean section may need two doses of the measles vaccine.
According to research published in the journal Nature Microbiology, babies born by C-section may not receive a single dose of the measles vaccine. 2 doses are necessary for adequate immunity.
Babies born by C-section are more likely to have a single dose of the measles vaccine be completely ineffective than babies born normally, the researchers said.
C-section babies’ immune systems may not produce enough antibodies to fight measles after 1 dose of the vaccine. “We have discovered that the way we are born has long-term effects on our immunity,” said study author Henrik Salje, a lecturer in genetics at the University of Cambridge in the UK.
It should be noted that before the measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, the disease caused an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year. This disease starts with a cold and along with it rashes also appear on the body. In severe complications it can lead to blindness, seizures and death.
