Lahore: The court has sought a response from the federal government on the petition filed to fix the new price of wheat.
A 2-member bench headed by Justice Ali Baqer Najafi heard the petition filed in the Lahore High Court to fix the new price of wheat, in which the petitioner’s lawyer, Advocate Bilal Ahmed, argued that the federal government imported 35 lakh tonnes of wheat despite having 40 lakh metric tonnes of wheat.
In the petition filed in the High Court, it has been further stated that the import of wheat by the federal government caused a loss of one billion dollars to the national exchequer. The Punjab government has maintained the same price of wheat as it was last year, even though inflation has increased by 20 percent, but the farmers’ rate has not been increased.
In the petition, the court has been requested to order the government to fix the new price of wheat. The court should also ask the federal government for a report regarding the wheat crisis.
Later, the Lahore High Court sought an answer from the federal government. Earlier, in the order dated April 30, the court had sought reports from the Punjab government and the Punjab Agriculture Department.
