A request was filed to stop the Prime Minister from appointing judges in Gilgit-Baltistan

Islamabad: An application was filed in the Supreme Court to prevent Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif from appointing judges in Gilgit-Baltistan.

In the petition filed by Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Khalid Khurshid, it has been requested that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif be stopped from appointing judges without consulting the elected government of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The Supreme Court issued a notice to the federal government and the Attorney General and sought their response by March 1.

In the petition filed in the Supreme Court, it has been argued that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is bypassing the elected government in the appointment of Chief Judge and Supreme Appellate Court judges in Gilgit-Baltistan. According to the Gilgit-Baltistan Order 2018, consultation with the elected government of Gilgit-Baltistan is necessary for any appointment.

In the request of Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan, it is further stated that the case is pending in the Supreme Court and the federal government is appointing more judges in Gilgit-Baltistan.

During the hearing, Justice Mazahir Akbar Naqvi inquired whether there is no consultation with the Chief Justice of Pakistan on the appointment of judges in Gilgit-Baltistan?, to which Makhdoom Ali Khan, the lawyer of Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Khalid Khurshid, replied that according to the law, judges On the recommendation of the Chief Minister, the Governor should send the names to the Prime Minister for appointment.

A 3-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Ejazul Ahsan issued a notice to the federal government and the Attorney General on the request of Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Khalid Khurshid and sought a response by March 1.
