A balanced diet is essential for a healthy mind

Texas: Food has multiple effects on human health, but these effects are difficult to pinpoint. A recent study has shed a lot of light on this topic.

The study, published in the journal Nature Mental Health, tells us how diet affects health, including mental function, metabolic biomarkers and brain structure.

A team of researchers analyzed 182,000 participants and found that those who consumed a balanced diet demonstrated better mental health and cognitive ability.

Isabel M. Vazquez, a registered dietitian at Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, said the study emphasizes making wise nutritional choices to improve mental function and mental health. Because some foods are good for mental health while others are associated with poor mental health.

For example, a diet based on fruits, vegetables and fish helps reduce the risk of depression and anxiety, while diets high in fat and carbohydrates reduce the risk.
