One person dies after taking vitamin D, doctors warn

London: Experts have issued a warning about vitamin D after the death of a citizen in the UK due to excess calcium in the blood.

According to media reports, 89-year-old British citizen David Michener has died due to hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia is a condition in which taking too much vitamin D increases the level of calcium in the blood because vitamin D plays a key role in the absorption of calcium into the blood.

David was admitted in a critical condition to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, where he died ten days later. David’s Dr. Jonathan Stevens reported that the 89-year-old’s vitamin D levels were too high, which proved fatal to David and caused hypercalcemia.

The report cited vitamin D overdose among other factors as a factor in David’s death. A test report before death showed David’s vitamin D level at 380 ng/mL, compared to the normal level of 20 ng/mL, which is sufficient for good bone health.

Dr. Jonathan said that since David’s death, concerns have been raised that taking vitamin supplements in high doses could potentially pose very serious risks.

He added that the labeling on the packaging of current supplements does not mention such risks. Even on the packaging of David’s vitamin D supplements, there were no warnings about the dangers or side effects of overdosing.

The doctor added, “In my opinion, there is still a risk that there may be more deaths in the future if no immediate action or law is made at the government level in this regard.”
