Washington: The suicide rate among teenagers in the United States has increased alarmingly over the past 20 years.
According to media reports, a new study shows that 47,000 Americans between the ages of 10 and 19 committed suicide over the past two decades, and the number is increasing rapidly each year.
A study published in ‘JAMA Network Open’ has reported that there has been a significant increase in the incidence of suicide among girls and boys.
American National Institute on Minority Health and Disparities Professor Cameron Ormiston said that the trend of suicide in the adolescent population is seen in all regions of the United States.
He further said that disturbing trends have also emerged in terms of race, gender and method of suicide. For example, drug-related deaths have increased by 2.7 percent annually among teenage boys compared to 4.5 percent among girls.
On the other hand, the number of boys who committed suicide by using a gun has increased by 5.3% annually and continues to increase rapidly. While suicide by gun among girls has increased by 7.8% annually.
