In America’s first living human pig kidney transplant, a 62-year-old man with end-stage kidney disease was transplanted with a genetically modified pig kidney.
It is reported that in the past, experts have transplanted pig kidneys into brain-dead people.
Officials at Massachusetts General Hospital say the four-hour surgery, performed March 16, marks a major milestone in efforts to make organs more readily available to patients.
According to the hospital, the patient is recovering and will be discharged soon. Human genes have been added to genetically modified pigs by removing harmful genes.
