Copenhagen: A new study has revealed that smoking can cause belly fat. Especially the type of fat that is associated with higher risks of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and dementia.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen combined the results of different genetic studies on more than 1 million people.
In the review, researchers looked at whether people who smoked juice had a different body fat distribution compared to non-smokers.
The analysis revealed an association between cigarette smoking and increased abdominal fat.
The researchers said that this type of fat is visceral fat that accumulates around the organs in the abdomen. This type of fat is hard to see. This fat can be present in unhealthy amounts even if a person has spotty stomach and can increase the risks of serious diseases.
Lead author of the study, Dr. German Carasquila, said that cigarette smoking is associated with abdominal fat independently of other factors such as socioeconomic status, alcohol consumption or ADHD.
Smoking cessation is critical to public health efforts to reduce the incidence of several chronic diseases (especially respiratory and cardiovascular diseases), according to research published in the journal Addiction.
