Hanover: Researchers have introduced a smartphone app that can detect depression from facial expressions using artificial intelligence.
According to media reports, a team of researchers in Germany has developed an app called ‘ModCapture’ which they say can provide opportunities for better mental health using AI technology.
The researchers presented a report at the Association of Computing Machinery’s CHI 2024 conference. Researchers from Dartmouth’s Department of Computer Science and Geisel School of Medicine in Hanover, Germany, said at the conference that AI-powered facial image processing software can detect depression before the user even knows it.
The application, called MoodCapture, uses the phone’s front-facing camera to capture images of the user’s face and surroundings during daily use, then provides results comparing facial expressions and cues associated with depression.
Co-first author of the study, Dr. Sabigia Nepal, told the media that we developed this app to fill a critical gap in traditional methods of monitoring and detecting depression.
He said that traditional methods often involve self-reporting by the victim and medical assessments that may be biased, but do not continuously monitor an individual’s mental state. This app fills all these gaps.
