Accused selling rare monkeys online arrested

Lahore: A woman officer of Punjab Wildlife arrested two accused involved in online illegal trade of buying and selling “monkeys” by posing as a student.

Nimra Rasheed, assistant director wildlife stationed in Faisalabad, took a unique approach to arrest a gang involved in online buying and selling of rare wild animals.

Nimra Rasheed disguised as a university student contacted the accused online and revealed the purchase of male monkey and female monkey.

Speaking to Express News, Nimra Rasheed said that a citizen named Khurram, who buys and sells wild animals and birds under the name of Royal Pets, had shared the video on his WhatsApp status and Tik Tok.

When he contacted the WhatsApp number given on social media, he spoke to a woman. Who said that they don’t have any monkeys at the moment, but they will order soon.

Later, according to Nimra Rasheed, the accused named Khurram held two baby monkeys and shared their video and demanded Rs 30,000 for one baby monkey.

He said, “The dealer was very clever, he kept avoiding them by pretending that the stock was not available for several days, but when he was sure that the buyer was really a student, instead of giving his address, he gave the address of the university.” Asked about which I told him that I study in such and such a university.

Nimra Rashid further said that she gave the accused a fake address of the local university in Faisalabad and started monitoring the entrance gate of the university along with her staff.

He said that the accused arrived with a delivery boy to deliver the supply of monkeys, when he was arrested and a challan was issued against him under the Wildlife Act, but the accused said that he was ready to pay the departmental compensation.

According to Punjab Wildlife officials, the dealer who illegally bought and sold monkeys was fined Rs 50,000 and the delivery boy who assisted him was fined Rs 10,000.
